Located overlooking the shortest crossings between England and France, Dover Castle is one of the most strategically important castles in England.
The impressive fortress was created by Henry II and his Plantagenet successors. It was designed by 'Maurice the Engineer' Henry II's architect between 1080 and 1185, as a symbol of kingly power and a palace for Royal ceremony.
Dover Castle was garrisoned uninterrupted until 1958, a continuous nine-century span equalled only by the Tower of London and Windsor Castle.
