The north door used to be covered in a skin which was said to have been flayed from the body of a marauding Viking.

The Norman church of St Michael and All Angels at Copford, near Colchester, is famous for its wall paintings which date to around 1150.  These include images of the apostles, the signs of the Zodiac and the flight into Egypt.  Although restored by the Victorians the original Norman chancel, with its apsidal end, and nave survive.
