Archbishop of Canterbury (1123-1136) and the architect of Rochester Castle Keep or Donjon. William also completed the construction of Canterbury Cathedral, which was dedicated in May 1130. Born at Corbeil on the outskirts of Paris in 1070. Died in Canterbury on 21 November 1136. Appointed the papal legate for England by the pope. Described by William of Malmesbury as a courteous and sober man, with little of the flamboyant lifestyle of the more 'modern' bishops.
